Mount Brydges United Church Cemetery

In 1856 parts of Lot 99, 38, 39, 31 were bought from John Emerson by donations of $10.00 from ten men for a site of a new Wesleyan Church on Wellington Street, Mount Brydges. Records reveal that C.N. D. Tilden, Josiah Tuck and Elijah Lee transacted the business. Land around the church was used as a burying ground and when the small brick church was torn down following the building of the present United Church the whole area was the Union Cemetery. The first burial is not known but a plot was sold to W.C. Robertson in 1877. Small tracts had been bought from the surrounding areas to make the area 3 acres. In 1916, 1.16 acres was bought from Louis Skedgell for $ 111.60. In 1940, Lots 99, 39, 38 and 31 of lot 18 Concession 2 were bought from Stephen Smith for $30.00. In 1940 the name was changed to the Mount Brydges United Church Cemetery. Following 1940 perpetual care of the grave sites was inaugurated, and in 1944 $1000.00 was put into debentures for the care of the grounds. Reverend C. Beacom gave much help. In 1944 the first annual memorial service was held under the spreading maples at the gate, and the first financial statement was presented. In 1971 funds were substantial. In 1972 roadways were greatly improved by asphalting. Here in a peaceful location rest many of Mount Brydges and Caradoc Township people who helped fashion the life of their church and community.
